2024 ASUP Elections: Afolabi emerges Chairman
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Gateway (ICT) Polytechnic Saapade chapter has elected new executives who will direct the union’s affairs for the next two years.
The keenly contested election had 86 total votes in which the chairman, comrade Afolabi Micheal pulled 77 votes, vice chairman, Sotayo Aro 78 votes, Secretary Opaleye Samuel, 82 votes, Assistant General Secretary , Awoniyi Modupe, 80 votes, welfare officer, Salako Basirat 82 votes, internal Auditor Sotonwa Olawale 84 votes, Treasurer, Tobin Spiff Modupe 80 votes alongside the Financial Secretary, Arowosegbe Adefunke 77 votes and the public relations officer, Abiodun Yetunde who had 46 votes against Fatuase Oluwafunmilola with 37 votes.
Describing the election as a power of collective voices in which leaders are chosen, the Rector of the polytechnic Dr. Sanni Kehinde Oseni in his remarks at the leadership hall urged the new executives to face challenges ahead with courageous leadership, wise decision-making, and unwavering commitment to the values of the polytechnic.
Representatives of the national body of the union closely monitored the election. In attendance were the zonal coordinator Zone C representing southwest and Kwara state, Comrade Maposa Adekunle; chairman ASUP, Ogun state polytechnic of Health and Allied science, Ilese Ijebu, comrade Adeyemi Stephen and chairman ASUP, D.S Adegbenro polytechnic, Comrade Dairo Lukman.
The Zonal Coordinator while commending the polytechnic’s management for the maintenance of the institution for a conducive learning environment described the election as free and fair.
According to article 24.1 of the union, 2022/2024 GAPOSA executives were dissolved in a motion moved and seconded by some members of staff of the polytechnic; Comrades Mahmood Zainab and Oguntuga Olabisi respectively.
