Parents should train their wards on security consciousness, the Rector, Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade, has said.

According to him, “insecurity is a new concept in Nigeria. Nobody looks for security education in time past. The world order is changing. We need to be prepared for the greater security challenges because the world is a global village”.

“Security consciousness is the application of security knowledge an individual possess regarding the protection of oneself when security challenges arise. Parents needs to expose their wards to security consciousness right from childhood. It could be formal or informal education. Security education is needed at this time to reduce the number of security breaches and the security challenges an individual is exposed to as well as how to respond properly to threats”.

Oyeyinka made this known at the functional security training series in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Command themed “Ensuring Functional Security Education for All”.

Speaking at the training, the State Commandant, Hammed Abodunrin, explaining that the integrity of every citizen must be secured, maintained that security is a global issue. Every country of the world is finding lasting solutions to its challenges of insecurity.

Abodunrin explained that the training was given at no cost as part of the responsibilities of the Corps to provide massive secondary education to Nigerians. We are targeting 10 million Nigerians in security education and its application to our daily activities. The Corps has initiated the train the trainers training for easy dissemination of security education to every household and communities.

Nigerians need to be security conscious because you cannot protect yourself against something one is oblivious of its existence. It is for everyone to know what to do, when to act and how to act when security challenges arises, he added.

The training had in attendance the Dean of Schools, Head of Departments, Heads of Unit and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Command.
